Know it when I see it

So, I guess the occasional F bomb really is ok in prime time. I think.

The FCC’s friendly new FAQ devoted to Obscenity, Indecency and Profanity will help answer any questions you might have on the subject.

Measuring Product Placement

Filed under distribution by david cummings on Monday 10 October 2005 at 12:08 pm

As someone who paid his rent writing and producing traditional :30 and :60 broadcast spots for many years, it is interesting to follow the steady rise of product placement in the entertainment landscape and its impact on traditional advertising branding strategies and entertainment revenue models.

Here’s a nice cross section of recent data from product placement measurement tool — iTVx Q-Ratio.

The logline evolves.

Filed under the pitch by david cummings on Saturday 8 October 2005 at 6:20 pm

Continue to refine the logline as I learn more about what works and what doesn’t when pitching a spec screenplay. Here is the new logline put into effect today.

The science vs. religion controversy escalates as two rival genetic research companies attempt to play God.

Earlier steps in the evolution of the logline for this project are here

Studio 8 First Impressions

Filed under production by david cummings on Wednesday 5 October 2005 at 3:51 pm

Since I skipped the upgrade cycle from Macromedia Studio MX to MX2004 I committed to upgrading to Studio 8 and Flash Professional 8 on first release. The promised new power tools for authoring with video, new mobile content tools and the additional actionscript I had been missing out on made the choice pretty simple. Plus they were offering a free Studio 8 backpack and a “free” jump for Flash 8 to Flash 8 Pro with pre release orders. What better thing to base a software upgrade decision on than a free backpack, right?

Fighting conventional wisdom

Filed under inspiration by david cummings on Tuesday 4 October 2005 at 9:39 am

Found some inspiration in the announcement for this years Nobel Prize in Medicine. Awarded to two Australian doctors, Marshall and Warren, who in 1983 put forth their theories on the true causes of ulcers — bacteria based infection rather than lifestyle.

PageRank

Filed under small business by david cummings on Saturday 1 October 2005 at 3:41 pm

As we try to map out the online distribution strategy for some of our content projects, the subject of how to getter a better ranking in your favorite search engine has come up again. No matter what kind of content you are developing, or business you are running for that matter, this topic has never really gone away.

The evolution of page ranking is interesting. Back in the day, your keywords and description metatags were the holy grail. They pretty much have been kicked to the curb right along with the Netscape browser. It’s now all about how many pages link to your site, and the value of those sites that link to you.

While the juicy details of exactly how sites are ranked are kept locked up pretty tight, Google does offer some limited explanation here.

Some nice history (is it urban myth that google trademark term pagerank is play on larry page?), explanation and some sample formulas on the topic as well found on WikiPedia.

Well then, that should clear up any confusion.

Mobile Content Delivery

Filed under distribution by david cummings on Thursday 29 September 2005 at 5:16 pm

About five years ago, while serving as a consultant for a large cable company, I developed my first wireless web enabled portal using HDML and WAP. It was only a demo and the project never got past the pitch phase, but it really got me geeked up about the future of mobile content delivery. Am glad to see that the promise is almost ready to be filled.

Long tail

If the Long Tail Theory holds true, that will be good news for content developers. So interesting to watch how the breaking down of barriers to distribution plays out.

Spoiling November

Filed under opinion by david cummings on Wednesday 21 September 2005 at 10:52 am

Been following the path of the indy effort November for a little while now. The business model and execution for the film is one we are trying to model.

Have noticed that for some reason some critics have felt comfortable dropping some pretty serious spoilers into their reviews of the film. See that behavior from time to time in blogs and bulletin boards, but never really seen it before from professional critics. Curious as to what the motivation is?
